The Textile Heritage of India

The artisan applies colour to the block before carefully pressing it onto the fabric.

The process is repeated, often block by block, to build the complete pattern.

For more intricate designs, different blocks may be used for different parts of the pattern or colours. The artisan must carefully align each impression to create the finished design.

This requires patience, precision and experience.

Because hand block printing is an artisanal process, small variations can occur between pieces.
